He graduated from Lanzhou University in 1975. After finishing his graduate study in the same university under supervision of Professor You-Cheng Liu, he joined the faculty of the Chemistry at Lanzhou University in 1982. As a research associate, he worked with Professor Ffrancon Williams on the structure and reactivity of radical ions in the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, from 1986 to 1989. He returned to Lanzhou University in 1990 and was assigned as associate professor in 1991. In the spring of 1994, he moved to the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC). He has been professor since 1995. He served as vice Dean of the School of Chemistry and Materials Science, and Chairman of the Chemistry Department (2000.6-2004.6). Now he is Deputy Director of the USTC Biomass Clean Energy Laboratory. He is member of the board of the Journal of Inclusion Phenomena and Macrocyclic Chemistry, Vice President of the Asia-Oceania Cyclodextrin League. Current research activities of his group include the experimental and theoretical studies on the structure and reactivity of organic compounds, electron transfer reactions in supramolecular systems, as well as green chemistry.
